Where
to Eat
Look
for a 10% to 15% service charge on your bill in most establishments,
although some of the smaller restaurants and bars such as The
Dunes Preserve leave the tip at your discretion. Check with
your waiter if you can't tell if the service charge has already
been added to your total.
Beach Bars
LeBeach Bar and Restaurant, Shoal Bay, (264) 497-5598. $$
This casual, open-air eatery is just steps from the action of
Shoal Bay. Choose from sandwiches, burgers, chicken salad, lobster
salad, and rib platters. The staff here is helpful and friendly,
and the food is tasty. Open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.
Uncle Ernie's, Shoal Bay, (264) 497-3907. $
One of Anguilla's best-priced eateries, this popular beach bar
serves up barbecue chicken, burgers, and crayfish in a relaxed
atmosphere. Wrap a towel around your waist and come straight
in from the beach.
Madeariman Reef, Shoal Bay, (264) 497-3833. $-$$
Watch the busiest beach on the island from this beach bar, which
offers table service and dining in a cool, shady environment.
Burgers and pizzas are available or enjoy a dish with a more
local flair. Seafood kabob, conch fritters, or lobster fettucine
elevate this restaurant to more than the typical beach bar.
The Dunes Preserve, Main Road, no phone. $-$$
This charming bar and restaurant, set up high above the seashore,
is one of the Caribbean's hidden gems. Constructed entirely
of recycled ship parts and driftwood, this open-air roost gives
visitors the feeling they're visiting Robinson Crusoe. In actuality,
they're visiting the restaurant and bar of Bankie Banx, Anguilla's
best known musician. The friendly reggae singer performs on
Friday nights as well as lunch on weekends, and other times
you'll find him behind the bar serving drinks. Go for a drink
and to enjoy the view, then stay for dinner. besides its title
as the island's funkiest bar, this is also one Anguilla's tastiest
restaurants (and that's saying something on an island favored
by gourmands.) We enjoyed an economical meal of barbecued ribs
with rice and peas and a sumptuous seafood salad. Don't miss
this one.
Caribbean
Old House Restaurant, George Hill. $$-$$$
Anguillian dishes are the specialty of the house in this historic
home. Choose from curried dishes, grilled steaks, and fresh
seafood. The restaurant is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner
daily.

such as black bean soup, island fish soup, lobster sandwiches,
and sautéed shrimp.
Eclipse At Pimms, Cap Juluca, (264) 497-6666/6779, $$$
Fine dining is part of the experience at Cap Juluca. Eclipse
at Pimms, the main restaurant, serves up California-Provencal
cuisine using local, fresh fish and produce. Executive chef
and partner of Eclipse at Pimms is Serge Falesitch, also executive
chef and partner of the Eclipse restaurant in West Hollywood.
Formerly executive chef at Spago's, Falesitch and partner Bernard
Erpicum, formerly of Ma Maison, bring to Anguilla a unique cooking
style and notable cuisine. Specialties include Grilled Peppered
Ahi Tuna with Artichoke, Sun Dried Tomato and Olive Vinaigrette,
Baby Snapper with Tomato, Black Olive, Fennel and Basil Vinaigrette,
and Wild Rice and White Corn Risotto with Grilled Quail.
Koal Keel, The Valley, (268) 497-5075, $$$
One of the Caribbean's finest restaurants, Koal Keel is an attraction
and a fine restaurant rolled in one. The menu includes Island
Pea Soup, a puree of pigeon peas and Caribbean sweet potatoes,
and Calalloo soup and continues with entrees including coconut
shrimp, "Drunken Hen," a Cornish hen baked and blazed
with 151 Bacardi, and crayfish grille. The wine list here is
a vertiable book; the restaurant has its own wine cellar with
separate climate controlled rooms for red and white wines. You'll
make all the dining decisions at once including dessert selections,
made to order. Vanilla creme brulee, mango tarte soufflé
and mango sorbet make the perfect end to a meal. After your
meal, enjoy a walk around this historic site followed by a complimentary
rum tasting.
Gorgeous Scilly Cay, Island Harbour, (264) 497-5123. $$-$$$
This offshore restaurant features Anguillian lobster as well
as grilled fish, chicken, and ribs. Just walk up to the dock
in Island Harbour and wave and a boat will come over to transport
you to Scilly Cay. Visitors can also enjoy a swim or a snorkel
around the reefs as well as live music on Wednesdays, Fridays,
and Sundays. The restaurant is open for lunch only 11 to 5 p.m.,
Tuesday through Sunday.
