Great Smoky Mountains National Park
The stone corn grinder turns slowly, sometimes picking
up tempo a little as the water-driven paddlewheel outside gets an extra
push. Before the water reached the moss-covered paddles, it traveled down
the hills, past deer, cattle and people alike, and finally into a slippery
and sometimes leaky flume.
Sound like a scene from the 1800s? It might well
have been. But for 20th century travelers, the old mill and an entire
settlement from a century ago lies deep in the Great Smoky Mountains National
Park.
This park, the most visited in the national park system,
has something for everyone, whether your familys interests are nature,
history, backpacking, hiking, or crafts.
The park is located right at the city limits of Gatlinburg.
There's no admission fee to the park.
When Are We Going?
Summer months are definitely the peak time to visit the
park and it can get very busy, especially on weekends. Fall is also a
popular time with autumnal color. Spring makes a great time for a getaway
here. Winter brings the quietest days although you may find some areas
of the park closed due to weather.
How Long Are We Staying?
At the very least, you need a full day to see the highlights
of the park. A two or three day visit is preferable.
What Should I Bring?
Good walking shoes, a jacket, and insect repellent during
summer months are good to pack.
