Gatlinburg Fishing
You don't have to go far for good fishing
opportunities in Gatlinburg; as this photo shows, you'll find trout fishing
right in town on the Little Pigeon River.
Fishing Regulations
The open season for trout fishing is April
1 - November 30. During this time, the daily limit is five trout from
general streams and two trout from children's streams. (No one over age
12 can fish from the children's streams.)
From December 1 - March 31, it's strictly
a catch and release season.
At any time, fishing is only allowed during
daylight hours (half an hour before sunrise through half an hour after
sunset) and only on a single, hand-held rod with a single hook.
All streams are closed on Thursday and all
fishing is prohibited on that day!
Tennessee Fishing License
You'll need to get a Tennessee fishing license
whether you are a state resident or not. Here are the requirements for
both in-state and visitor fishing licenses:
Tennessee Residents:
If you possess a TN driver's license, have lived in Tennessee
for 90 consecutive days, are military personnel on active duty or are
a student enrolled in a TN university for at least six months, you qualify
for an instate fishing license. Adults age 16-64 need a Gatlinburg permit
(one-day or three-day) plus an annual trout license and one of the following:
annual hunt and fish combo, county of residence, one-day fishing license.
- If you are age 65 or older, you'll only need a permanent
senior citizen hunt/fish/trap license or an annual senior citizen permit.
- Kids age 13-15 need a Gatlinburg permit (one- or three-day)
and a junior hunt/fish/trap license.
- Kids age 9-12 need a Gatlinburg permit only (one- or
three-day).
- Children under age 9 don't need any license or permit
to fish.
Non-Tennessee Residents:
- Adults 16 and over need a non-resident Gatlinburg one-day
license OR a combination of a Gatlinburg one- or three-day license PLUS
either a three-day all fish, 10-day all fish, OR annual all-fish license.
(There's no senior exemption for out of state anglers.)
- Kids age 13-15 need a Gatlinburg permit (one- or three-day)
AND a nonresident junior hunt and fish license.
- Children 9-12 need a Gatlinburg permit only. There is
no license or permit requirement for kids under age 9.
