When
in Cyprus...
Great destinations and attractions of interest to romantic
travelers...
Petra tou Romiou,
Birthplace of Aphrodite
Between Limassol and Petra
Here, on a rock that rises from the sea, Aphrodite was allegedly
born from the waves; today locals say will bring eternal youth
to those who swim around it three times.
Lefkara
This village, located east of Paphos, is known as the home of
the island's best lacemakers. Lacemaking has been practiced here
for centuries and it's not uncommon to see women sitting outside
their shops making the delicate lace. Although the handmade lace
is expensive, good buys can be found on silver filigree and Commanderia,
a Cypriot after-dinner wine.
Troodos Mountains
North of Limassol
These rugged mountains, often dusted with snow in the winter months,
are home to many painted churches and quaint villages.
Tombs of the Kings
New Paphos
Dating back to 300BC, this site was once the burial place for
royalty. Today you can tour the crypts, located below the ground,
empty except for tourists.
Cyprus Museum
Museum Street
Nicosia
This extensive museum is a must-see for anyone interested in the
long history of Cyprus. Displays start with Neolithic times and
provide a good understanding of the Roman and Greek ruins throughout
the island.
Ayios Lazarus
Plateia Agiou Lazarou, Larnaka
This church, which stands in the center of Larnaka, is filled
with icons and relics of Lazarus. Below the church lies an ancient
crypt believed to once contain the sarcophagus of Lazarus.
Salt Lake
Near Larnaka International Airport
A favorite with bird lovers, this flat salt lake is home to many
brilliant flamingos during the winter months. On the edge of the
lake stands Hala Sultan Tekke, the burial place of Mohammad's
aunt and one of the most sacred places in the Islamic world.
Limassol
This beautiful city is often called the "Paris of the Mediterranean"
because of its European air, sidewalk cafes, and stylish atmosphere.
Kourion
West of Limassol
This site, overlooking the sea, was once home to a Greek amphitheater
and Roman baths. Today lovers can tour the ancient site and see
the Villa Eustolios and a Roman stadium.
Kolossi Castle
West of Limassol
First built in the 13th century, this fort was built by the Knights
of St. John during the Crusades.
House of Dionysos
Paphos
This historic site houses numerous Roman mosaics, protected from
the weather and well preserved.
Kition
Kyman St., Larnaca
This ancient site dates back to the 13th century BC; here honeymooners
today find the ruins of temples.
