Fast Facts: Mexico

Entry Requirements:
Travel to Mexico is easy for US citizens; proof of citizenship is required such as a passport or certified birth certificate with a photo ID. A free tourist permit is issued upon entry and is good for 180 days.

Arrival in Mexico:
When arriving in Mexico, each traveler will go through the new traffic light customs system. Each incoming passenger completes a customs declaration form; when that form is passed through the machine a red light will indicate a spot check of luggage. Used for some time in Mexico City, this system has now been implemented across Mexico.

Currency:

The currency is the peso. Travelers quickly find that US dollars are accepted at most shops, however markets will require pesos.

Credit Cards and ATMs:

Major credit cards are accepted at most shops although ATMs are not available in some outlying areas.

Tipping:

Tips or propinas range from 10-15% of your total bill. Generally taxi drivers do not expect tips.

Health Concerns:

For most travelers to Mexico, the largest health worry is impure water. Many resort hotels have their own water purification plants, but bottled water is recommended off the beaten path.
