Around
the World in 80--or More!--Days: How to Buy a Round the World
(RTW) Ticket
Are you considering a really unique honeymoon or romantic getaway--one
that's a real getaway? The two of you can take off on your own
Jules Verne Around the World in 80 Days adventure--with hot air
balloons purely optional-- thanks to special 'round the world
airline (RTW) tickets.
What are these tickets? They're offered by many major airlines
and offer you multiple stops as you make your way around the globe.
Different programs have different restrictions. Some have penalties
for changes; others don't. Some might prohibit backtracking; others
won't. Most will have a time limit of 12 months but shorter time
periods are available as well.
If the two of you do consider an around the world trip, keep this
in mind:
- Set up your itinerary
in advance. While it might seem romantic to just head to a country
for an indefinite period and later continue, you'll find that
many countries require proof of an onward or return ticket when
you arrive. You'll also save money by purchasing your tickets
in one batch.
- Buy trip insurance.
This will cover you if you should become ill and be unable to
make this expensive journey.
- Pay with a credit
card.
- Remember that
you can take ground transportation between cities--you don't
have to fly between every stop. You can plan a train excursion,
cruise, or hike between stops if you like.
- Check and doublecheck
your travel arrangements. Learn if reconfirmation of your tickets
is required and at what time.
- Schedule some down
time. It's tempting to pack as many visits as you possibly can
in this itinerary, taking advantage of all your possible stops.
However, don't forget the schedule some time for romance. Travel
is tiring so plan some downtime halfway through your trip to
rest and relax.
- Sign up for a frequent
flyer program! With the mega-miles you'll be earning, the two
of you will be well on your way to your next romantic getaway!
