You've got the perfect Caribbean getaway or honeymoon planned for the two of. There's just one problem: he's a diver and you're a non-diver. Have no fear: in the islands, you'll find several options that the two of you can explore together. Although he'll no doubt want a few scuba sessions (perfect for your spa break!), these water activities can give the two of you the chance to enjoy some fun on the water -- and even underwater--together. Sea Trek This underwater experience is great fun and doesn't require
any swimming experience. You literally walk underwater, wearing a big
diving helmet. (OK, the helmet's so-so looking but your hair stays dry!)
For more, see our article on Sea Trek. Tethered Scuba For those curious about the undersea world but not ready
to take the plunge for a full certification course, several outfits in
the islands offer a tethered scuba experience to depths of 20 feet. In
Grand Cayman and St. John, tethered scuba operators give you the option
of shallow scuba diving. Youll start with a simple class on use
of the gear then wade out for a shallow water dive. At all times, you
are connected to the air tank floating on the surface by a 20-foot tube.
With this tube, youll breathe just like any other scuba diver. For more underwater fun, several islands are home to submarines
that give you the chance to see beneath the waves without ever getting
wet. Atlantis submarines, found on Grand Cayman, St. Thomas, Barbados,
and Aruba, plunge to a depth of 100 feet below the surface. On other islands, semi-submersible subs are another option.
On these vessels, the boat never submerges but visitors walk down into
a glass hull for a look at the undersea world. These are a good choice
for the budget conscious and for those who think a closed hatch is just
a little too much togetherness. Snorkeling If you've got a basic swimming knowledge, snorkeling can
be great fun and an excellent introduction to the underwater beauty and
rich marine life found in the Caribbean waters. Many scenic reefs can
be enjoyed with equipment as limited as a mask and a snorkel. Just yards from shore, you can enjoy a look at colorful
corals, graceful fans, and fish like friendly sergeant majors, butterfly
fish, and shy damselfish. Most resorts offer snorkel equipment for little or no charge.
To prevent your mask from fogging, rub saliva on the inside of your lenses.
Dishwashing liquid and special alcohol-based non-fogging formulas may
also be used. Even non-swimmers can enjoy a look below the waves with
snorkel gear. Don a mask, stand in the shallows, and just stick your head
in the warm water for a look at another world just inches away.
