Sandals's Silver Anniversary

A Growing Family

Exclusive Sale at Sandals ResortsSince the next big milestone after a wedding often is the start of a family, it was no surprise that one of the milestones in the resort history was the opening of its first family-oriented resort, Beaches Negril Resort & Spa, situated on a beautiful stretch of ivory-white sand.

This new brand welcomed singles, couples and families with lots of fun activities and supervised kids’ programs. Growing demand soon brought more additions to the family: Beaches Turks & Caicos Resort & Spa, Beaches Boscobel Resort & Golf Club, and Beaches Sandy Bay. (Today, another new sibling is on the way: Beaches St. Lucia.)

As with the weddings, the innovations of this branch of the family tree have attracted their own special partnerships. Guests of all ages at Beaches Resorts enjoy the special partnership with Sesame Street, with its year-round character activities.

Beaches Boscobel, Jamaica

These innovations caught the eye not only of the traveling public but of industry experts as well. According to Teresa Plowright of About.com’s popular Travel with Kids website, "Beaches had an inspired idea -- and scored a real coup-- in partnering with Sesame Street, and the resorts are making the most of the deal, with live shows, photo ops with Elmo and the gang, plus themed activities for kids such as baking with Cookie Monster. Lately, in terms of kid-pleasers, Beaches has been thinking both in and out of the box, also partnering with Xbox for its Oasis games centers." The game centers have proven a popular break from the beach; guests play as much as they want at the state-of-the-art centers featuring the latest games.

Reaching Silver…and Going for Gold

Of course, as with marriage, keeping the romance alive means nurturing what sparked it in the first place. In 2005, the resort company grew with the addition of a new Sandals in Jamaica. Sandals Whitehouse European Village & Spa became the first major resort on the island’s South Coast, an elegant resort built around the concept of three European “villages,” a unique concept in the Sandals line. Guests can look for more one-of-a-kind properties in the future. Hints Stewart, “We will continue making them different because the whole thing with Sandals is, it’s a question of choice.”

And what else is on the horizon? More innovations, more options, more harmony. Like any good family, Sandals and Beaches have reinvented themselves once again, aiming to please the sophisticated traveler with even more tempting options. Recently the resorts have been divided into two collections: the Classic Collection, with all the features guests have grown to love over the past 25 years; and the Signature Collection, a class that elevates the resort stay to an all-new level of pampering.

But some things will always remain the same, such as the friendly service that is for many repeat visitors the hallmark of the resorts. Patt Warren, who since 1985 has stayed at Sandals Montego Bay nearly 100 times, recalls, “There are still employees at the resort who were there in 1985. That is the special part of returning.” The Treasure Island, Florida resident says, “I think their biggest asset is the staff. They are so personable and make you feel at home. I call it my second home.”

Love, after all, is what helps any relationship reach those milestones. As the company commemorates its 25th anniversary and moves forward into its second quarter century, lucky guests already know there are plenty of reasons to celebrate not just a silver anniversary, but a concept that’s pure gold.
