If Kenny Chesney’s “Moments in the Sun” television special has you longing for the islands, St. John makes it an
easy order to fill. This exclusive island is home to Kenny Chesney but it’s
also a popular getaway for romantic vacationers who would like an island
home away from home feeling for a few special days.
Why It’s Dreamy: Unlike neighboring St. Thomas (home of the closest
airport), St. John is quiet and, while dependent on tourists, certainly
not touristy. Two-thirds of the island is protected by national park; the
remainder of the island is quiet. Although you’ll find the Westin St.
John here as well as some smaller properties, a unique part of the island’s
appeal are its many villas, the perfect way for the two of you to feel like
celebrities yourselves.
Your Own Moments in the Sun:
While there’s no guarantee you’ll see the island’s best known
resident, it’s easy to enjoy some of his favorite attractions on the
island and nearby:
- Rhumb Lines restaurant, Cruz Bay,
St. John: This small restaurant served margaritas in a pre-wedding celebration
the night before the beachside wedding of Chesney
and Renee Zellweger. The two of you can enjoy Caribbean as well
as Pacific Rim fare at this eatery.
- Woody's Seafood Saloon, Cruz Bay.
Just a block from “downtown” Cruz Bay, this casual eatery
has long been a favorite hangout of Chesney’s; it served dinner
after the Rhumb Lines margarita-fest the night before his wedding. The
two of you can drop by here for the bar’s famous happy hour or
stay for a casual Caribbean seafood dinner.
- Ivan’s Stress Free Bar, Jost
Van Dyke, British Virgin Islands. The video for “No Shirt, No Shoes,
No Problems” was filmed at this beach bar on the nearby island
of Jost Van Dyke. If you don’t have your own private yacht like
Chesney, that, too, is no problem; tour operators take regular excursions
to charming Jost Van Dyke for the day. (Bring along your passport or
proof of citizenship for the trip to the British Virgin Islands.)
