Who: actress
Sharon Lawrence ("NYPD Blue", "Desperate Housewives")
and doctor Thomas Apostle When: May
31, 2002 Where: The
traditional Greek Orthodox service was held at Saint Sophia
Cathedral in Los Angeles. The Proposal:
The couple became engaged during a Christmas vacation in Montreal,
Canada. The Ceremony:
The outstretched arms of the Virgin Mary, her beatific visage
painted on the wall above the Holy Altar, beckoned to the bride
as she made her way down the aisle with her father, their path
illuminated by the twenty-one crystal chandeliers which dangled
from a ceiling adorned with portraits of archangels, saints,
and the figure of Jesus. Over two hundred guests watched as
the couple sealed their love with platinum wedding bands and
took part in the ancient Greek custom of wearing the stefana--
two halos of intertwined flowers bound together with ribbon,
which was placed upon their heads three times. The Dress: While the actress was seen by millions of TV viewers in the same house of worship wearing an off-the-shoulder, white lace gown with a Basque waistline which flowed into a billowing satin ballroom skirt as she "wed" her on-screen love Andy Sipowitz in an episode of "NYPD Blue," for her own wedding the actress chose to say her vows in her mother's wedding dress-- a champagne-colored creation of duchesse silk satin which had been altered for an off-the-shoulder neckline which gave the gown her own imprint. Upon her blonde
tresses, arranged by stylist Romi Courtier, was attached a cathedral
lengeth veil embellished with lace floral designs and a scattering
of crystals which trailed behind her as the bride walked down
the carpeted aisle in a pair of white lace Moanolo Blahnik slingback
shoes with pointed toes. To complete the look, the bride carried
a nosegay of gardenias. The Reception: After changing into a white chiffon dress with delivate spaghetti straps by Ali Rahimi, the bride kicked up her heels at the Catalina Room, where the newlyweds drank to their love from Swarovski crystal flutes as guests dined on filet mignon, sea bass, and slices of a four-tiered wedding cake.
