Who: HRH Princess Margaret and photographer Antony Armstrong-Jones

When: May 6, 1960

Where: The couple were united in marriage inside Westminster Abbey in London, England.

The Ceremony: A sun drenched spring day greeted Princess Margaret Rose as she began her journey to Westminster Abbey in a horse-drawn Glass Coach, tracking the same route taken by her sister Elizabeth in 1947.

From the carriage, the bride acknowledged the crowd of well-wishers lined up on the Mall, which was festooned in kaleidescopic floral displays for the occasion. Those lucky enough to be in the vicinity of the Abbey heard trumpets herald the bride's arrival with "Master of The Queen's Musick" before the princess, clutching the arm of her brother-in-law, the Duke of Edinburgh, began her walk down the aisle to "Christ Is Made The Sure Foundation."

Over two thousand guests and millions of television viewers (the wedding was the first royal nuptials to be televised) witnessed the Church of England ceremony in which the groom placed a wedding band upon his bride's finger to accompany an engagement ring consisting of a ruby anchored amidst a cluster of tiny diamond leaves.

The Dress: One of the great beauties of her day, the princess had no need to rely on embellishments to accentuate her charms. Her wedding attire-- a Norman Hartnell creation composed of white silk organza with a cinched waist that flowed into a billowing ballgown skirt draped over tulle petticoats, was completely devoid of ostentatious details. Upon Margaret's chestnut tresses, which were arranged in a refined chignon, rested the Poltimore tiara, to which a cathedral-length veil of silk organza was attached. To complete the look, the princess carried a cascading bouquet comprised of orchids.

Halos of flowers adorned the heads of eight young bridesmaids, who wore short-sleeved, ballerina-length dresses accented with ruffled hems by designer Norman Hartnell. A young Prince Charles, also a member of the wedding party, was garbed in a tartan kilt and ruffled cravat.

The Honeymoon: The newlyweds set sail aboard Brittania for a six-week excursion to the Caribbean islands.
