George W. Bush and Laura Welch's Wedding
Who: President
George W. Bush and Laura Welch
When: November 5, 1977
Where: The First United Methodist Church in Midland,
Texas
The ceremony: Years before taking the oath of office,
the future 43rd President of The United States pledged an oath
to love, honor and cherish the librarian and elementary
school teacher he had met only four months prior at
a friend's barbecue. Bathed in the kaleidoscopic rays which
emanated from the prominent stain-glass window, seventy-five
witnesses gathered in the Glass Chapel of The First United Methodist
Church in the couple's hometown of Midland to watch the intimate
ceremony. Eschewing attendants, the bride and groom stood alone
at the altar.
The dress: In keeping with the low-key atmosphere, the
bride chose a long-sleeved, tan crepe de chene blouse combined
with a calf-length skirt of the same hue. Taking a cue from
her new mother-in-law's sense of style, Laura wore a strand
of pearls which, along with a small bouquet of white gardenias
pinned at the waist, were her only adornments. The groom opted
for a dark business suit embellished with a white orchid boutonniere.
The reception: Before embarking on a quick jaunt to Mexico,
the couple celebrated their union at The Racquet Club of Midland,
where the nostalgic strains of a barbershop quartet provided
the entertainment.
