Like a joyful echo from the past, exactly thirty-four years after wedding bells pealed at Stockholm Cathedral for King Carl Gustaf and Queen Silvia’s wedding, their cheerful chimed announced the happy news that their daughter, the Crown Princess Victoria of Sweden, had just married the man she loves.
Clutching a teardrop a bouquet in one hand– its beauty, the royal court website revealed, consisting of Amazon lilies, azaleas, bleeding heart, clematis, cosmos, dicentra formosa, gardenias, lily of the valley, Marbocha pelargonium, myrtle, phalaenopsis orchids, peonies, roses, sweet peas and wax flower– the bride linked arms with her father and began her walk down the porcelain blue aisle runner which led to the altar. Young bridesmaids dressed in silk organza and and page boys in sailor suits flanked Sweden’s present and future monarchs as they strolled toward the groom Daniel Westling, who met his bride half way down the aisle. The king, kissing his daughter’s hand, stepped aside so the happy couple could start their journey together through life.

A gathering of royal guests, including Prince Edward, the Earl of Wessex and Sophie Countess of Wessex, Queen Beatrix of The Netherlands, Crown Prince Frederik of Denmark and Princess Mary, Princess Martha Louise of Norway and her husband Ari Behn, and the bride’s sister Princess Madeleine of Sweden were on hand to witness the beaming bride in her gown– a garment of refined simplicity created of of duchess silk satin by Swedish designer Par Engsheden. As the princess walked past family and friends, a lace veil worn by her mother on her wedding day clung to the cameo tiara, which was originally a gift from Napoleon to his wife Josephine. The diadem– which features a depiction of Cupid and his soul mate Psyche– had also rested on the head of Queen Silvia on the day she said “I do” to King Carl Gustaf XVI.
Amid arrangements of pink sweet peas and blue delphiniums, Archbishop Andes Wejryd pronounced the pair husband and wife. To the music of Praise the Lord with Drums and Cymbals by Siegfried Karl-Elert, the newly-titled Prince, Duke of Vastergotland escorted the princess from the cathedral to a horse-drawn carriage which bore the newlyweds through the streets of Stockholm.
