As the 2008 presidential election draws near, Lovetripper takes a look back at the wedding of the ABC News Chief Washington correspondent who will be covering the event as history unfolds November 4th, former political adviser George Stephanopolous:
Colleagues of the ABC network, Peter Jennings was accustomed to reporting the news of the day while Barbara Walters ruminated over events with her co-stars on The View. On November 20, 2001, however the TV icons became the news as they took their seats alongside 200 other guests in the pews that line the Cathedral of the Holy Trinity in Manhattan and waited for the start of one of the most prominent occasions on New York’s social calendar that year– the wedding of George Stephanopoulos, the former adviser to President Clinton, and actress Alexandra Wentworth (known to TV trivia buffs as “Schmoopy” from an episode of Seinfeld).
Candlelight illuminating their path, two cherubic flower girls in white carried bow-adorned baskets down the aisle as junior bridesmaids crowned with white blossom wreaths followed close behind before the bride made her grand entrance in a lace accented, silk Vera Wang creation, People magazine reported. Smiling as she passed by familiar faces such as model Paulina Porizkova and political commentator James Carville, she walked toward the altar where her groom, dressed in a dark Gucci suit, waited to make her his wife.
Having proposed on a Greek isle, the groom further honored his heritage by asking his father, a Greek Orthodox priest, to preside over their union. Once proclaimed Mr. and Mrs., the bride displayed her recently-acquired dancing skills at the reception as she performed traditional Greek dances with her new family.
