Just like the title of his first hit single, crooner Ruben Studdard felt as though he was “Flying Without Wings” on June 28, 2008 as a preacher pronounced the American Idol second season winner and Surata Zuri McCants, husband and wife. As the clock struck noon the bride, just a fan when she met her intended two years ago during a record signing appearance at an Atlanta Wal-Mart, found herself walking down the aisle in a strapless Casablanca creation, smiling as she passed by the gathering of 300 friends and family members who rose in her honor inside the Canterbury United Methodist Church. At the end of the path her groom was waiting, dressed in a dapper black tuxedo from Joseph Abboud, which he had paired with a white vest and bow tie.
Following the exchange of vows, the Birmingham News reports that the newlyweds were whisked away in a Cadillac Escalade XL for a reception held at Rosewood Hall in Homewood, Alabama. The event was the highlight to a week which began with the Grammy-nominated Velvet Teddy Bear obtaining a marriage license from the Shelby County Probate office in Columbiana, Alabama.
