63008: Flavio Briatore’s Wedding

Although sheltered from the ever-present eyes of the paparazzi by a plethora of parasols, well-wishers standing outside of Santa Spirito in Sassia basilica caught a glimpse of Elisabetta Gregoraci’s lace-lined, 23 foot-long veil as it draped across the steps of the 12th century house of worship moments before the model, who has graced fashion runways the world over, began her walk down the aisle. Duran Duran members Simon LeBon and Nick Rhodes were among the 350 guests who rose in honor of the bride as she made her way to the altar in an ivory Roberto Cavalli gown, its plunging neckline offset by the addition of Chantilly lace and demure spaghetti straps.

Performed by Italian tenor Alessandro Safina, the reverential refrain of “Ave Maria” echoed inside the cathedral during the June 14, 2008 ceremony in which the groom, Renault owner Flavio Briatore, presented his bride with a wedding band to accompany her 6-carat diamond engagement ring.

Following the ceremony, rice rained down upon the newlyweds as they clasped hands and hurried toward their ride, which was driven by Formula 1 champion Fernando Alonso to a reception at Rome’s Castello di Torcrescenza, where reported that bottles of celebratory red and white wine flowed late into the night.
