Just as a crimson carpet had marked the bride's path into the City Hall of Mechelen for the civil wedding ceremony, so a red aisle runner guided Archduchess Marie-Christine of Austria to the altar of St. Rumbolds Cathedral, where Count Rodolphe of Limburg Stirum waited to once again pledge his love.
