80708: Paul McCartney Vacations on Route 66

It’s a long and winding road from The Hamptons to Santa Monica, California– 2,855 miles, to be exact, and Paul McCartney will definitely not be a “Day Tripper” as he and his lady love Nancy Shevell enjoy life on the open road this summer. Packing their bags in a 1989 Ford Bronco, the couple struck out July 30, 2008 on a month-long sojourn which will pair a music legend with an American icon– Route 66.

On August 2nd, McCartney and his travelling mate were spotted near the Mother Road’s origins when they stopped at a gas station in Springfield, Illinois. According to the Chicago Tribune, the two were typical tourists when they strolled through the Joliet Area Historical Museum. Three days later the traveling twosome had made it as far as Bricktown, Oklahoma, where reported that the Grammy winner mulled over the menu at Nonna’s Ristorante and Bar.

An eight-state drive will take the former Beatle and his companion through Illinois, Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma, the Texas panhandle, New Mexico, Arizona and finally California, where a journey that will leave them with “memories longer than the road that stretches out ahead” will end at the Santa Monica Pier.
