Photo: Looking Back at Prince Charles and Diana Spencer’s 1981 Engagement

Although nothing could match the sparkle in her eyes that day, the play of light on Diana Spencer’s engagement ring came in a close second. Purchased from Garrard Jewellers, deemed the Crown Jeweller since the time of Queen Victoria, the ring featured an oval blue sapphire embraced by 14 small diamonds. The couple, who became engaged on February 6, 1981 in the nursery at Windsor Castle, according to Andrew Morton’s book Diana Her True Story, accepted the well wishes of the press on the 24th of the same month as the official announcement was made from Buckingham Palace that the heir to the throne had chosen a bride.
