How to Get Married in Sweden

Applications and/or Documents Required:
Bring along original copies of the following (and be sure pack these in your hand luggage, never in your checked bags):

Proof of citizenship (a valid passport is sufficient)

Certified Birth Certificate (the names of both parents must be listed)

If previously married, you must provide a certified copy of the final divorce decree or a certified copy of the record of death of the deceased spouse.

Proof of being free to marry. This is in the form of an affidavit that may be signed before a Swedish notary public, or before an American consular officer at the Embassy in Stockholm

An Application for Marriage in Sweden must be made by personal appearance at the Local Tax Administration (Skatteförvaltningen)

The requirements for marriage in the applicant's home state must also be presented. Please note that the Embassy can not assist in obtaining the marriage laws from individual states in the U.S. You can inquire at your local county clerk office for requirements in your home sate.

Publication of Bans of Marriage is voluntary. If you decide to have the bans read, they must be read on three successive Sundays in the parish where the Application for Marriage has been made. This is to allow any person who may object to the marriage the opportunity to do so before the wedding.

Please note:

  • A church wedding in the Church of Sweden (a Lutheran State Church) can be performed only if one or both parties to the marriage are registered with the Church of Sweden. (Also, only a Swedish citizen or a foreign resident of Sweden may be a member of the Church.)
  • For a civil ceremony you can obtain more information from the Local Tax Administration.
  • A marriage officiant has to be contacted as soon as possible to organize a time and date as certain times of the year get booked very quickly
  • After the marriage has been performed, contact the Local Tax Authority. Be prepared to bring the document from the ceremony (Vigselbevis), in order to obtain the official registration of your marriage.
