How to Get Married in Guatemala

Residency Requirements: none

Waiting Period: 3 days

Requirements: Under New Zealand law, anybody can marry (as long as you are not already married or planning to marry a relative). If you do not live in New Zealand, you should check with the authorities in your home state to see if there are any rules that apply when you marry in New Zealand.

Before you can get married:

  • Decide when and where you want to get married. You will need to know these details when you complete your application for a marriage license.
  • Choose a Marriage Celebrant. In New Zealand you must be married by a registered marriage celebrant. You can contact a Registrar of Marriages for a list of approved marriage celebrants.
  • You will need to contact your celebrant and agree on a time and place before applying for your marriage license.
  • Apply for a Marriage License at the nearest New Zealand Marriage Registry
  • Make a Statutory Declaration. As part of completing the application form for a marriage license, you need to make a statutory declaration that there is no lawful impediment to the marriage, that the details you give are true, that the bride and groom are not within the "prohibited degrees of relationship".
  • A marriage license is normally issued three calendar days after the Notice of Intended Marriage form is submitted and the fee is paid.

Marriage License: Your marriage license is valid for three months from the date on which it is issued. During that period you are free to marry at the place specified on the marriage license.

If you change your approved celebrant or your venue, before the marriage has taken place, you must advise the Registry office from where your license was obtained.

For more detailed information, visit the New Zealand Department of Internal Affairs website here . From this site you can also download some of the forms and applications that you will need when applying for your marriage license.
