How to Get Married in Guatemala

Marriages in Guatemala are almost always performed by local civil officials (Alcalde Municipal) or a Guatemalan lawyer.

Applications and/or Documents Required: Bring along original copies of the following (and be sure pack these in your hand luggage, never in your checked bags):

Valid passport

Certified copy of birth certificate

If previously married, a certified copy of the final divorce decree, or a death certificate if marriage ended due to death of spouse

Affidavit of Eligibility to Marry. This is a sworn statement written by the U.S. citizen stating that they are free to marry and notarized at the American Consul.

All non-Guatemalan documents presented to the marriage registrar must first be authenticated by a Guatemalan Consul in the United States

When a foreigner requests to be married in Guatemala, Guatemalan law requires that the foreigner publishes an announcement in the official newspaper for two weeks to make sure there are no objections to the marriage

Residency Requirements: none

Waiting Period: none, however, please note that you must publish a newspaper announcement for two weeks prior to the marriage.

Blood Test: none
