How to Get Married in the Northwest Territories

Marriage licenses are available from the Vital Statistics office of the department of Health and Social Services in Iqauit NU.

You may also obtain a marriage license from a Marriage License Issuer, located in many northern communities.

Applications and/or Documents Required: Bring along original copies of the following (and be sure pack these in your hand luggage, never in your checked bags):

• Birth certificate
  
• Social security card
  

If previously married, a certified copy of the final divorce decree, or death certificate if marriage ended due to death of spouse

You will also need to know the following information:

• Full names for both sets of parents (including mothers' maiden name)
  
• Place of birth for both sets of parents
