How to Get Married in Barbados

Obtaining a marriage license: Your first step in obtaining an application for a marriage license is to stop at the Ministry of Home Affairs office. Bring along the following documentation in English or with a certified translation:

valid passports or birth certificates

copies of applicable marriage certificates

death certificates for previous marriages that ended with spouse’s deat

original decrees or certified copies of divorce judgments

a letter from the authorized officiant who will perform the service.

Waiting Period: There’s no waiting period—just say "I do!"

Cost: The price of a wedding license is about US$75 or $150 Barbados dollars as well as a US$12.50 stamp.

Church Weddings: To have a Roman Catholic wedding on island, couples must show proof of a pre-marital interview with signatures by the couple and the home parish priest, a Statement of Freedom to Marry signed by the home parish priest. Couples must also present certified copies (ones signed, dated, and stamped by the home parish official) of baptismal certificates issued within the past six months indicating freedom to marry.

In addition, couples must present a certificate proving participation in a marriage certification program, permission to marry or dispensation from disparity of cult issued by the Bishop of the Catholic party if one member of the couple is Catholic, record of confirmation, copies of applicable declarations of nullity or death certificates of previous marriages ending with spouse’s death, and testimonial letters from the couple’s archdiocese. These documents should be send by your home bishop to the bishop of Bridgetown, St. Patrick’s Presbytery, P.O. Box 1223, Jemmott’s Lane, Bridgetown, West Indies (246.426.3510). There is an additional fee ($) for use of the church as well as a modest fee if you would like the music of an organist.
