How to Get Married in Australia

In Australia, a Civil Marriage Celebrant can marry couples anywhere, anytime.

You can choose to have your ceremony in a hot air balloon, on a beach, underwater, at a hotel, or anywhere you want. You may create your own ceremony, as long or short as you want, and rings are optional.

You will need to have two witnesses (over 18 years old) present, but there is no rule about how long you have known them.

Applications and/or Documents Required: Bring along original copies of the following (and be sure pack these in your hand luggage, never in your checked bags):

• Passport
  
• Certified Birth Certificate
  
• If previously married, bring a certified copy of the final divorce decree, or death certificate if marriage ended due to death of spouse.
  
• In addition to the required documents, you must fill out a Notice of Intended Marriage form. This form must be submitted to the celebrant at least one month before the ceremony is to take place. If you live outside of Australia, you can have the form faxed to you, and it may be filled out and witnessed outside of Australia.
