Romantic Travel Ideas

from How to Make Every Trip a Honeymoon

In England? Visit the homes of some of the world’s most famous romantic writers: William Shakespeare, Jane Austen, the Brontës.

Book a sleeper compartment on a train.

Along the Dead Sea, spas offer scrubs using Dead Sea salts. See if your resort offers scrubs with the salts and muds to leave your skin baby soft and oh-so touchable.

In Vegas for a show? Treat your partner to even better seats with a tip (or a “toke” in local lingo) to the maitre’d. Usually $20 is expected for special seating requests.

Take a nighttime helicopter ride, especially in cities like Las Vegas, known for their spectacular lights.

Even if you’re feeling perfectly healthy, don’t miss the chance to visit a Moroccan pharmacy. Like a witch doctor’s den, these mysterious shops tucked in the souk’s alleys, offer local love potions.

Visit Bangkok’s gold market for one-of-a-kind jewelry purchases. The two of you can have matching rings made (of your own design or copying one you’ve seen) within days. Or maybe you’d prefer matching silk robes? Tailors can whip up custom-made creations in days.

Bermuda is home to many stone moongates, brought from Asia with the tradition that if couples kiss beneath the round stone gate they’ll be assured happiness.

Charter a sailboat for a private sunset sail.

In Venice? Kiss in a gondola under the Bridge of Sighs.

Plan an excursion to Oklahoma—then pucker up for a smooch beneath the state flower: the mistletoe.

Charter a small yacht in the Caribbean. Prices are comparable to luxury resorts and the two of you can chart your own course.

In Chichen Itza, Mexico, have your anniversary date written in ancient Mayan characters at the pyramid and surrounding historic city.

Visit Cozumel, Mexico where Mayas came to worship Ixchel, goddess of fertility.

Create your own fantasy camp. You set the theme!

Get married (or married again!) at the Hilton Amsterdam in the room where John Lennon and Yoko Ono had their “bed in” honeymoon.

If you and your lover don’t like the intimacy of a B&B, check out guest houses. These accommodations (often utilizing historic cottages) are private and the two of you are the only guests. Call local chamber of commerce or convention and visitors bureau offices and ask about the availability of guest houses.

In Bermuda, his and her wedding cakes are topped with seedlings and newlyweds plant the trees to mark their love. If you’re visiting the island, contact the Department of Tourism about leaving your own growing legacy on the island.

In Israel, weddings, births, and special events are often celebrated by the planting of a tree. Many groves throughout the country permit travelers to buy a sapling and plant it. Be sure to have your picture taken with your tree.

In Morocco and other Muslim countries, brides visit the hammam or baths before the wedding for a head to toe bathing. Visit a Turkish bath or hammam and come back feeling like a pampered baby.

In search of eternal beauty, couples visiting Cyprus swim naked around Aphrodite’s Rock three times (counterclockwise) under a full moon. The rock is said to be where the legendary Aphrodite, goddess of love, was born form the sea foam. not in Cyprus? You’ll have to find your own rock!

In the 1950s Errol Flynn started what has become one of Jamaica’s top tourist activities. Noting the banana farmers taking their produce down to market on long bamboo rafts on the Rio Grande, he one day asked for a ride. Soon, the notorious lover was floating women down the expansive river, naming one section that winds between two boulders Lovers Lane.

In Jamaica, take a cruise on the M.Y. Zein, a yacht first given as a wedding present to Grace Kelly by Aristotle Onassis. Today the elegant vessel is docked at Grand Lido Negril and takes guests on romantic sunset cruises.

Rent a villa for the ultimate in privacy. Some include cook and maid service.

Rent an RV for a weekend rendezvous where the bed is never more than a few steps away!

Riverboat for a real change of pace. The slow rhythm of river travel takes a day or two to get into. Once the two of you slow down, you can enjoy a look at life along the river—whether that river is the Mississippi, the Nile, or the Danube.

Spend a night in an ice hotel in Quebec or Sweden. You’ll find plenty of reasons to cuddle!

Stay in one of the small plantation inns of St. Kitts and Nevis. The historic greathouses are filled with legend (and even a few resident ghosts!)

Take a train ride.

Tour a brewery or distillery.

In Paris, why not visit the Rodin Museum and see his monuments to love up close in an intimate setting.

Tour a cave and sneak a kiss in the quiet, dark recesses.

Tour a ghost town.

In Verona? Romeo and Juliet were real lovers–visit the real Juliet’s balcony.

Vacation at a dude ranch.

Visit a local flea market.

Visit a medieval banquet or Renaissance festival.

Visit a “pick your own” orchard.

Visit the Caribbean islands during Carnival. Don a mask and party without inhibition.
