Sandals Antigua Resort & Spa
Antigua

NOTE: At this time, Sandals Antigua is undergoing a renovation and expansion program, promising to making it one of the top in the chain.

At this Sandals, fun means activity. Located on a beautiful stretch of sand, this is one of the most active resorts in the all-inclusive chain. Activity coordinators, or Playmakers, keep things going for those who want to stay busy.

For couples preferring inactivity, two-person hammocks and “love baskets,” which are wicker chaise swings built for two, offer quiet afternoons beneath shady palapas.

Who's There:

couples only

Unlike other Sandals, about half of the clientele at this resort is European. Most visitors are young couples, and, especially during the spring and summer months, many are honeymooners or couples getting married on their honeymoon. During our late May visit, we counted three weddings on one afternoon alone. The resort offers the WeddingMoon package, presently free for guests with a five-night stay (although you pay government fees for your license.)

Our Opinion:

We liked this Sandals for its low-slung buildings spread along a wide swath of white beach. We stayed in a rondoval room, an octagon-shaped cabin with a tall conical ceiling, louvered windows, and a true Caribbean atmosphere. At this resort, guests in the upper category rooms enjoy Suite Concierge Service for booking restaurant reservations or assistance with island tours, a fully-stocked, complimentary in-room bar, daily N.Y. Times fax, and terry robes. Another romantic feature here is the excellent spa, although spa services are not part of the all-inclusive package.

Dining:

Like other properties in this chain, the resort has many restaurants from which to choose: an open-air main dining room that offers international fare in the evenings served a la carte, an Italian restaurant (with an excellent sunset view—get there early for a beachside table), and a Japanese restaurant where active chefs will prepare your meal right at the table amid flurry of flying knives and implements.

Sandals offers a unique “Island Hopper” program. The two of you can design a custom itinerary and hop from one Sandals to another. Air isn’t included but you can design your own package and change room categories from property to property if you like. Sandals resorts are found on Antigua, Jamaica, Bahamas, and St. Lucia.
