Brickyard Barn Inn

Topeka, Kansas

Looking for a country getaway? You can't get a more genuine country escape than at the Brickyard Barn Inn, a bed and breakfast housed in a former dairy barn. Four acres await exploration then couples can return to the elegance of the inn, filled with English antiques and offering gourmet dining thanks to the skills of owner/innkeeper Scott Nickel. The inn also hosts many weddings every year. "Couples love it because it is picturesque and because my wife and I are willing to take most/all of the stress off of the bride by making or coordinating all of the details," says Nickel. Lovetripper.com recently spoke with Scott Nickel about this unique romantic inn.

What are some of the most unique aspects of the Brickyard Barn?

We are a 75-year-old dairy barn that was converted into a home in 1976. The building was professionally designed by an architect and he over-designed the building to the point that it has stood the test through two floods and other horrendous weather.

Much of the building is very unique. We have photos of the conversion and the actual "Brownie" photos of the construction in 1927. We have had guests from around the world and some low level celebrities. My background: Submarine sailor for 6 years, met President Nixon on the boat. Taught for 6 years (7th grade math) and started a catering business that led to our B&B. Also unique is that since I am a caterer, I won't do the same breakfast twice during a guest's extended stay.

What's a typical breakfast at your property?

We always have an entree, fruit and starch, juice, coffee. Many mornings I will do a Vegetable Fritata, muffins, fruit salad with raspberry sauce. Other mornings I will do a Custard French Toast and I also do some quiches. Some mornings I will do Pecan-Maple Bacon as a side. A week ago we had a lightning storm which knocked out our power over night. My power didn't come back until 2pm (after the guests left), but I put out a hot breakfast that morning!

What's the best time of year to visit?

May through July: weather is great, we are decorated for the wedding season (we will do 17 ceremonies this year). The exception is December. We spend about 150 man-hours decorating for Christmas, with a 16-foot-tall Christmas tree as the highlight.

Describe one of your most unique weddings.

One of our most unusual was a renewal of vows just recently. Very touching, but the pastor knew the couple well. The pastor has a great sense of humor and with this he not only touched on many wedding topics (respect, honor, commitment, etc.), but he did it with humor and kept the audience very entertained. We have photos of most of our ceremonies. Our packages include everything that the families want. We can do virtually everything.
