Are You Ready for Sweetest Day?

by Paris Permenter and John Bigley, editors of Lovetripper.com

Are you ready for Sweetest Day? While Valentine's Day might pop out on the calendar at you, Sweetest Day isn't quite as well known, although it's a fun holiday for romantics (with much less pressure than its February cousin.)

Sweetest Day is always the third Saturday of October, a good excuse to be sweet to the one you love during a beautiful autumn day.

Just what is Sweetest Day? It's a holiday that started in 1922 in Cleveland, Ohio. Appropriately enough, the holiday was started by a candy company employee. No, it wasn't started as a commercial holiday but as a way to show people who might otherwise be overlooked that someone cared. The caring employee started distributing candy and small gifts to orphans, shut-ins, and others.

But the holiday soon grew. Movie stars added their fame to the event. Actress Ann Pennington gave Cleveland’s newspaper boys boxes of candy in recognition of the public’s gratitude for their service. Actress Theda Bara presented candy to theater visitors then handed out 10,000 boxes of candy at Cleveland hospitals.

Although the holiday was first centered in Cleveland, its fame soon spread, growing especially strong in Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Ohio, and Wisconsin. Eventually it caught on with romantics and became a fun way to share a little romance. Even Hallmark got in on the Sweetest Day interest, producing cards starting in the 1960s. Today they have over 140 Sweetest Day cards.

Husband and wife team Paris Permenter and John Bigley have authored over 20 guidebooks and also edit Lovetripper.com Romantic Travel Magazine<A HREF="http://www.lovetripper.com/">, an online publication featuring worldwide destinations.
