Best Beaches
of St. Martin
by Paris Permenter &
John Bigley
There's no denying that St.
Martin's beautiful beaches, nearly 40 in all, are one of this island's
top assets. Whether the two of you are looking for pulsating action or
blissful privacy, you'll find it somewhere on the island. On the French
side, topless sunbathing is standard and nudity is permitted on the nude
beach at Orient Bay. Top beaches include:
Long Bay (Baie Longue).
As its name suggests, this is the largest beach in St. Martin. From
here you can walk west to Plum Bay, a shadier stretch of sand.
Grand Case Bay. Located
right in downtown Grand Case, this beach is relaxed and a good place
to cool off after a midday meal.
Little Cayes. One of the
most isolated, this beach can only be reached by boat or by a 30-minute
walk from Cul de Sac along a coastal trail.
Galion Beach. These protected waters make
them a favorite with beginning windsurfers and snorkelers.
Orient Bay. This is the
liveliest place on the entire island, definitely the spot to see and
be seen. This long stretch of powdery sand is lined with beach bars,
restaurants, and watersports operators. Chaise loungers and umbrellas
are available for rent all along the beach. The nudist area is located
on the east side in front of Club Orient; photography is prohibited
there.
Baie Rouge. Swimmers find
good conditions at this quiet hideaway.
Coconut Grove. Families
and snorkelers enjoy placid waters at this shady beach.
Baie de l'Embouchure. Protected
by a coral reef, these waters are good for sailing and windsurfing.
Baie Lucas. Good diving
from a shady beach here.
